In Cabo, your mission depends on your perspective. Command the 240HP yourself or strap into the passenger seat for a pro-driven High-Velocity Recon.
Self-Drive

Mission Intelligence
1. Which mode is better for adrenaline?
Ride-Along. A pro-driver can push the 240HP Maverick R to race-grade speeds and technical maneuvers that take years for a self-driver to master.
2. Can I switch during the tour?
Yes. Our missions are flexible. You can take the wheel for the technical arroyos and swap to the passenger seat for the high-speed coastal sprints.
3. Is self-driving physically demanding?
Baja terrain is rugged. While the Fox 3.0 suspension does the heavy lifting, navigating sand and rock for 2-4 hours requires focus and some physical engagement.
4. Do I need insurance for self-drive?
Yes. We provide comprehensive asset protection options at checkout. Ride-along passengers have zero liability for equipment damage.
5. Which is better for photography?
Ride-Along. Rule the ride while our pilot holds the perfect lines for lighting and vistas, allowing you to focus 100% on your lens.
6. What is the driving clinic?
For self-drivers, we provide a 20-minute tactical briefing on UTV weight transfer, sand braking, and trail communication protocols.
7. Can my teenager self-drive?
Drivers must be 18+ with a valid license. Teenagers make excellent ride-along passengers for the high-velocity portions of the mission.
8. Is the pro-driver a guide?
They are professional Baja racers and navigators. They don’t just “guide”; they teach you the physics and history of the Baja trails.
9. What if I get stuck?
If you self-drive and get stuck in deep sand, your pro-navigator handles the recovery instantly. You are never left behind in the desert.
10. Why is this private?
To ensure your mode of choice is respected. Public tours force everyone into a “middle-of-the-road” pace. We calibrate the entire mission to your skill or thrill level.

When booking a private off-road expedition with Take The Wheel Baja, clients often assume they are forced to do the driving. While commanding a 200-horsepower Can-Am Maverick X3 is the ultimate adrenaline rush for many, it is not the ideal scenario for everyone.
Some travelers visit Cabo San Lucas to decompress. Navigating complex boulder fields or driving at high speeds across unpredictable sand dunes requires intense focus and rapid decision-making. We offer two distinct modes of execution for our private tours: the adrenaline-fueled Self-Drive experience, and the highly luxurious, scenic Ride-Along experience.
The Self-Drive Experience
This is the definitive Baja adventure. You sit in the driver’s seat. You dictate the throttle, you manage the corners, and you feel the raw mechanical feedback of the vehicle.
To ensure your total safety, our expert pilot guide leads the convoy in a separate vehicle. You follow their lines through the desert, accelerating when they signal it is safe, and slowing down when hazards approach. This option is engineered for thrill-seekers, gearheads, and travelers who want to actively participate in conquering the terrain. If you want the authentic feeling of being an off-road racer, Self-Drive is the only choice.
The VIP Ride-Along Experience
Not everyone wants the stress of navigating a $30,000 racing machine over dangerous cliffs. The Ride-Along option allows you and your guests to slide into the passenger seats of a 4-seater Can-Am Maverick while one of our veteran Baja guides takes the wheel.
- Focus on the View: When you aren’t staring intently at the rocks five feet in front of the bumper, you can actually look up and appreciate the sprawling Pacific Ocean vistas and towering cactus forests.
- Professional Photography: You can safely operate a DSLR camera, drone remote, or smartphone while the vehicle is in motion to capture incredible, dynamic footage.
- Maximum Capability: Because a professional is driving, you will likely experience a much faster, smoother, and more capable run through the technical sections of the trail than you could execute yourself.
Why Private Guided Beats Everything
Regardless of whether you drive or ride along, executing the tour privately is the key. In a generic Self-Drive tour, you are forced to drive at 10mph behind twenty other tourists. In our private tours, if you are driving your own Can-Am and demonstrate excellent car control, the guide will push the pace. Conversely, if you book a Ride-Along, you can tell your driver exactly how smooth or aggressive you want the ride to be.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. Can we switch between driving and riding along during the tour?
If you booked a Self-Drive tour with multiple adults in your vehicle, you can absolutely swap drivers during scenic stops. However, if you book a dedicated Ride-Along, our professional guide remains in the driver’s seat for insurance and logistical reasons.
2. Is the Ride-Along option cheaper?
Pricing configurations vary based on the vehicle selected (2-seat vs 4-seat). Please check with our live concierge for exact multi-passenger pricing.
3. Do I need a driver’s license for a Ride-Along?
No. Only active drivers in a Self-Drive tour are required to present a valid driver’s license.
4. Is the Ride-Along scary?
It is as serene or as aggressive as you command it to be. Our guides are trained to read the passengers. If you want a smooth, careful, highly scenic drive, they will deliver exactly that.
5. What if I start driving and get too nervous?
Because the tour is private, we can adapt. If a technical canyon section arises and you feel uncomfortable, signal your guide and they can assist you in navigating it safely.
6. Which is better for families with small kids?
If parents want to fully engage with their children and point out local wildlife without the intense distraction of driving the terrain, the Ride-Along in a 4-seater Can-Am is spectacular.
7. Do Ride-Alongs go to the same places?
Yes. Both options utilize the exact same pristine, private tracts of desert, beach, and canyon.
8. Is the Ride-Along guided by an English speaker?
Yes, our lead pilots are fluent, deeply knowledgeable about local history, and act as excellent conversational guides during the expedition.
9. Will I still need a helmet if I am just a passenger?
Yes, DOT-approved helmets and safety goggles are strictly mandatory for all occupants inside the vehicle.
10. Can we book multiple vehicles with different setups?
Yes! For large private parties, some guests can command their own Can-Ams while others ride along with a guide in a separate 4-seater.
